today i was grinding and welding all day long. Really fun to put on the welding boots and my old welding coat from when i worked in Allegheny Ludlum, a steel mill north of Pittsburgh. My Uncle Walt gave me the jacket, made just for welding (with pockets on the insides and snaps at the wrists to keep sparks out) back in probably 1984. It's still in perfect shape and did the job. How is it that i've kept it around all these years? I guess i just knew i'd be welding again one day.
The most amazing thing to me is the smell of grinding steel and the taste of the smoke while welding. I know it can't be healthy, but i'm at least working outside.
The really odd thing is that after being dressed up as a welder, like i used to be every day, and out there with the smoke and the helmet and watching the orange glow of the puddle behind the stick
...i really really want a cigarette right now, something i've had no urge for maybe since i last was welding, back in 1986.
don't know if it's the smoke, or purely the perfect combination of sensations
don't think i need to follow up on that one

Hi Bernie:
No, don't follow up-- but it is interesting what can stimulate that urge-- trying to avoid the urge was a big reason for me stopping writing poetry when I quit smoking in 96.
Always look forward to seeing your posts.
John
